Species: For the most part, human. His body contains cells from an alien organism named Jenova but he was conceived as a human. (expanded upon in History)
Sexuality: For the most part, Sephiroth has never really bothered with sex. It is a way to release tension. Who he does it with does not really matter and he has taken both sexes to bed, as long as he finds them at least moderately attractive. If he thought about it, he would probably consider himself bisexual.
Appearance: Sephiroth is tall and always appears perfectly groomed. He has waist length silver hair that should by all rights be a pain to take care of. However, there is no way that Sephiroth will ever cut it willingly. His eyes are cat-like and glow green, as result of the Jenova cells and mako pumped into his system from a very early age. He is muscular and strong since he has trained his body since an early age.
His clothes are usually black, since he considers it a practical colour. Blood stains don't show up. He wears a long leather coat, trousers made from a durable material and calf length boots. Two straps criss-cross over his chest and the lower half of his abdomen is covered by a rather large belt featuring a geometric pattern – the logo of Shinra's SOLDIER unit. He also wears shoulder plates kept in place by straps on his coat.
Personality: At a glance, Sephiroth seems to be the perfect general he was made out to be by Shinra – cold, fearless, detached and merciless. But there is more to Sephiroth than that. His cold detachment stems from never having much contact with others his age. He never developed the same social skills as others, something else which has set him apart. To protect himself from harm, Sephiroth closed off his personality. However, this does not mean that he does not feel loneliness. Sephiroth is still a man and desires friendship and companionship the same as any other. However, it is hard for him to admit to feeling lonely because that would make him vulnerable. Anyone wishing to make friends with him will have something of a fight on their hands but anyone persistant and openly friendly will have a decent chance at getting through Sephiroth's shell.
Sephiroth is also the type to do what is necessary to survive. If that means co-operating with people he does not necessarily like, he will. Sephiroth is anything but suicidal. If bitten by a crab, he will tend to himself as best he can but in the absence of any knowledge about it, will be forced to seek out someone who knows more and may be able to help him. He hates to be weak, having been so strong for much of his life. If something is weakening him, he will want it set right as soon as possible. For example, if he is bitten by a crab then he will tend the wound as best he can by himself until someone can tell him who to go to for healing or, if a friend he has made can heal him, he will let them. Sephiroth does not like weaknesses and though I can see him being stubborn and refusing help when he can do it alone, he will likely not let himself be weakened by infection for long, if possible.
Sephiroth is very intelligent although he has been viewed as a mindless soldier due to the way he followed orders for Shinra. However, he is far from mindless and stupid. Hojo would have been very disappointed in him if he had not showed signs of above average intelligence. He can also be quite stubborn, especially when it comes to revealing something about himself that he doesn't want to. Anything he reveals to others is either of his own volition.
Abilities: Sephiroth's natural abilities were enhanced on his home world due to injections of mako and Jenova cells while he was still in the womb right up until his adult life. It is likely that they never stopped until the incident at Nibelheim where he learned the truth about his roots. His enhanced abilities included strength, agility, speed and possibly his ability to learn and think quickly. Upon arrival in Manhattan, Sephiroth finds that his strength, agility and speed have been reduced down to the levels of a more ordinary man. He is still strong and fast, but it is as if he never had the mako and Jenova treatments.
He is skilled with a sword, more from training with one since he was a child and this does not diminish though his strength does.
Weaknesses: Sephiroth hates to be seen as weak. He has become used to the idea that he is stronger and better than everyone else and hates that that is no longer the case since arriving in Manhattan, despite the fact that part of him always resented being so different. The subject of his differences is a sore spot with Sephiroth because he loathes the idea of being the product of an experiment. Any derogatory remarks towards his differences, Jenova and his madness will likely result in Sephiroth losing his temper – which he will hate because letting his emotions get the better of him is also a sign of weakness in his eyes. To the silver haired man, emotions are just there to let him get hurt and so he closes himself off. Rarely will he show any intense feelings.
Physically, Sephiroth will be no stronger than if he had not received the mako and Jenova enhancements. He also lacks his masamune and any materia so fighting will have to be done through other means though Sephiroth dislikes using his fists. Should Sephiroth ever find himself in a situation where he requires help, he is practical enough to accept it and polite enough to thank the one who assits him but deep down there will be a part of him that will resent himself for ever needing help in the first place. Jenova is actually an alien virus, called the 'calamity from the skies' by the Cetra – an ancient race that once lived on his home world and were capable of talking with the planet. When Hojo suggested performing an experiment on the unborn Sephiroth, Lucrecia agreed in the interests of science. At the time, they perhaps thought that Jenova was an ancient, as was the original theory but it is possible that Hojo knew the truth by then. The aim of the experiment is to try to create a superior being.
After the birth, Lucrecia disappears, leaving Hojo free to claim Jenova is Sephiroth's mother and that she dies when he was born. Sephiroth does not believe he has any hometown, but since the experiments took place in the Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim and Sephiroth himself feels a strange familiarity when he is sent back to the town shortly before learning the truth of what he is, it is possible that he was born there.
Sephiroth was mostly kept isolated as a child. He was much different to the other children his age. His silver hair and cat-like eyes set him apart as much as his advanced abilities. Sephiroth seemed to find a friend in Zack Fair, Angeal's protoge, after they were gone.
A couple of years after Genesis and Angeal are seemingly killed, Sephiroth is sent on a mission to Nibelheim to investigate the reactor there. There are reports of monsters and apparently several SOLDIER operatives have also gone missing, who were investigating the disappearance of a Shinra official – Director Lazard, who once commanded SOLDIER. It is during this mission that Sephiroth finds out the truth about his origins. The reactor contains several pods of inhuman creatures and it is revealed that they were once humans but have been infused with Jenova cells until they became monsters. Sephiroth does not want to believe it and locks himself up in the Shinra Mansion basement for days, reading the scientific journals left there.
It is during this time he becomes convinced that Jenova is an Ancient, a Cetra, and as her son, he is destined to 'take back the planet from the traitors'. Ordinary people, he assumes, left the Cetra to die when the 'calamity from the skies' came. He burns Nibelheim to the ground in his anger and returns to the reactor to take Jenova from her 'prison' there. He kills several people, including Tifa Lockhart's father and Cloud Strife's mother.
At the reactor, Sephiroth injures Tifa, slicing her open with his sword, the masamune. When he enters Jenova's chamber, Zack confronts him but Sephiroth 's attack sends him reeling back. When Cloud arrives, he takes Zack's Buster Sword and stabs Sephiroth with it. Sephiroth is not killed by the attack though and retaliates by stabbing Cloud. However, Cloud proves to be stronger than expected and uses his own body as a pivot to throw Sephiroth over the edge of the pathway into the bottom of the reactor.
This is the last that is seen of Sephiroth for five years.
When Sephiroth reappears, it is when he attacks the Shinra Building in Midgar. He kills many employees, takes what is left of Jenova from the Science Department and murders the company president. Then he leads Cloud and his friends around the planet, killing Aerith in the Forgotten City and obtaining a legendary materia with which he can destroy the planet. Using the materia summons a huge meteor to crash into the planet. After using it, Sephiroth seals himself away behind a barrier, which is destroyed by a large mako cannon transported from Junon to Midgar. Cloud and gang go up to the Northern Crater to put an end to Sephiroth. They fight Jenova and then two transformed versions of Sephiroth before Cloud finally faces the real thing in the Lifestream and defeats him.
Two years later, Sephiroth manages to come back with the help of three young men – Kadaj, Yazoo and Loz, remnants of Sephiroth – who are looking for Jenova. After Kadaj uses Jenova to transform into Sephiroth, he battles with Cloud. Cloud defeats him once again to stop him from destroying the world.
At this point, Sephiroth finds himself snatched from his world and transported to Manhattan, free of any of Jenova's influence over his body or mind.
